The Washington Redskins have elected not to pay left tackle Trent Williams for this season, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.
The Redskins placed Williams on the non-football injury list Thursday, giving them the option not to pay him over $5.1 million in remaining base salary. They elected not to do.
The decision is not surprising considering the tumultuous situation between Williams and the team. Williams ended his holdout on Oct. 29 but failed his physical after experiencing discomfort while trying on his helmet.
The Redskins did pay Williams for last week after he reported to the team.
Williams had multiple procedures that resulting in a cancerous growth being removed from his head. Williams ended his silence last week, calling out the team’s medical staff and recently pointing the finger at team president Bruce Allen for false leaked reports.
Williams told USA TODAY Sports, the “bridge is definitely burned” between he and the Redskins. Today’s decision by the team all but seals the notion.
Now, Williams can only hope he is ultimately traded or released by the team this off-season. Washington reportedly wanted a huge return in trade talks ahead of this year’s trade deadline, but to no avail. It will be interesting to see Williams’ trade market now that a divorce seems inevitable.
