Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins got his first NFL win Sunday as the Redskins clipped the Detroit Lions 19-16. Haskins struggled throughout the game completing just 13 of 29 passes for 156 yards and one interception that included several overthrown passes.
However, on the game-winning drive, Haskins made three solid plays that moved the chains. He scrambled for 11 yards up the middle for a first down. He also connected with fellow rookie Kelvin Harmon for a key pickup. Then he found rookie standout Terry McLaurin for a big 17-yard pickup that set up the game-winning field goal.
For the second straight week, Haskins had a strong finish. When asked after Sunday’s game, the rookie boasted he was a closer.
Asked about improving within the game the last two weeks, Haskins says “I’m a closer. It’s what I do.”

Proclaiming to be a closer, and “that’s what I do” is a bit of a stretch after just one career win. Haskins struggled mightily throughout the game. Of his missed throws, three of which could have resulted in touchdowns but he was completely off.
One can love his confidence but it’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance. In his defense, he may have been just excited for his first career win. He did get “so hyped” he took selfies with fans near the stands when his team needed to run a kneel down play to seal the win.
Still, Dwayne Haskins will have to be better through the first three quarters of games and have more than just one clutch finish to be labeled a “closer” just yet.
