Dwayne Haskins got his first NFL win as the Washington Redskins edged the Detroit Lions 19-16. The win snapped the Redskins’ nine-game home losing streak and was just their second win in 11 games this season.
Haskins guided the Redskins to a game-winning drive following a clutch interception by cornerback Quinton Dunbar. But the rookie quarterback making his third NFL start was not on the field for the game’s final play.
Redskins cornerback Fabian Moreau got his second interception of the day with two seconds remaining to seal the win. However, the Redskins needed to kneel the ball for the final two seconds. Instead of Haskins, Case Keenum went under center for the final snap.
Following the game, interim head coach Bill Callahan explained Keenum took the final snap because the team couldn’t find Haskins, who was busy taking selfies near the stands with fans.
“I’m happy we won. We’ll address that,” Callahan added per John Keim of ESPN.
Yes, Haskins is a rookie and was making his third start. And yes, he helped guide the Redskins to their first home win since last year, but this is not a good look. Not one bit.
Especially given, he wasn’t that great in the game, certainly not the best player on the field. He completed 13-of-29 passes for 156 yards and one interception. He missed opened receivers throughout the game.
Not to mention the Redskins had poor clock management which is part was due to Haskins’ immaturity. Three times the Redskins had to use their timeouts after getting first downs thanks to an overzealous Haskins who celebrated each play and not getting his team back to the line of scrimmage to run another play.
Nonetheless, the Redskins got the win, but Dwayne Haskins will certainly answer to his coaching staff and possibly veteran players for his rookie gaffes.
