Former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera will interview with the Washington Redskins Monday, according to multiple reports. Rivera is the Redskins’ top choice and owner Dan Snyder reportedly will pull out all stops to secure Rivera’s services.
According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, Snyder is prepared to give Rivera an offer he cannot refuse.
According to NBC Sports’ Julie Donaldson, the offer will include Rivera having total control and final say in the upcoming NFL Draft.
She adds Rivera has been told that longtime and embattled team president Bruce Allen is “out” of football operations. A condition that is sure to entice Rivera or any other head coach candidate for the Redskins.
Despite being fired ironically following a Week 13 loss to the Redskins, Rivera is well-respected and may be well sought after for league head coach openings. Snyder understands how wanted Rivera is and wants to swoop in immediately to secure the guy he wants.
Rivera guided Carolina to three straight NFC South titles from 2013-2015 and four playoff appearances in his nine seasons there. He also guided the Panthers to a 15-1 record and an appearance in Super Bowl 50.
To give so much to a head coach shows Snyder understands the status of his franchise. After a decade under Allen, the Redskins need a huge reset. Yes, there are reports that Allen will simply be re-assigned, but it appears he will be kept away from football operations to appease Rivera and the fan base.
Rivera seems close to be the next Redskins head coach without the team appointing a new head of football operations and general manager. However, there should be some optimism that whoever is placed in those role(s) will be someone of interest to Rivera.
