Report: Greg Olsen Opened to Joining Redskins

Greg Olsen is opened to reuniting with his longtime coach Ron Rivera in Washington, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Recently, Olsen and the Carolina Panthers mutually agree to part ways after he spent nine seasons with the franchise. Now, Olsen, who turns 35 years of age in March, will weigh options of continuing to play football or continue a path of broadcasting as an on-air NFL analyst.

Olsen was traded to Carolina from the Chicago Bears in 2011 where he joined Rivera. Rivera was fired by Carolina in December following a Week 13 loss to the Redskins.

Rivera, ironically, was hired by Redskins owner Dan Snyder to become the team’s head coach shortly after the end of the 2019 regular season. Rivera has already brought in several assistant coaches from the Panthers, adding players from his former gig is certainly not out of the question. Especially, since Rivera has authority over the Redskins’ football operations

Olsen does address a Redskins’ need, tight end. Washington lost both their top two tight ends Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis to concussion in 2019. Reed never played a snap in the regular season after being a victim of a helmet-to-helmet hit in the preseason.

Reed has seven documented concussions since 2010, leading his playing future in jeopardy.

Davis, who turned 36 years of age Friday, was limited to four games before a concussion ended his season.

Jeremy Sprinkle was the Redskins’ leading tight end with 26 catches, 241 yards and a touchdown in 2019.

Olsen played 14 games in 2019, catching 52 passes for 597 yards and two touchdowns.
