Latest update suggests Trent Williams may be done with Redskins after contract demands

Trent Williams’ days with the Washington Redskins may be coming to end after high contract demands, according to Julie Donaldson of NBC Sports Washington. The Redskins are not willing to budge which may lead to inevitable trade.

Williams sat out the entire 2019 season, as he was not happy with the Redskins’ handling of a cancerous growth on his scalp. Then, he sought a trade or release if he could not a get a new deal, but longtime team president Bruce Allen refused to grant the seven-time Pro Bowler’s wishes.

After public statements by both Allen and Williams it appeared clear bridges were burned between the two. However, this off-season after a dismal 3-13 record, owner Dan Snyder reshaped the Redskins’ front office and coaching staff that included the firing of Allen and Hess.

Newly hired head coach Ron RIvera sought to smooth things with Williams. Initially, it appeared everything was on track for Williams’ return to the Redskins in 2020. However, recent developments of a new contract have halted any progress made.

Williams has reportedly once again requested a new deal or trade. Which would be understandable given the fact the 32-year old will be entering the final year of a five-year deal. While he is set to receive $12.5 million in base salary for 2020, none of the money is guaranteed.

However, Williams is seeking a mega deal in an attempt to recoup lost money from him sitting out the 2019 season.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Williams is seeking $19-$20 million a year, essentially stamping how many in the organization thought Williams’ hold out last year was about money all along.

According to Michael Silver of NFL Network, Rivera is “unlikely to spend a lot of energy” trying to appease Williams.

During last season’s ordeal, there were arguably more fans siding with Williams than not on his holdout. That was based on the narrative of the training staff misdiagnosing the growth on his scalp that later required multiple surgeries to remove.

The scale of opinions is sure to change with the latest developments, given Rivera and Snyder have tried to meet Williams head on with the firings of Allen and Hess.
