As each day goes by the rumors swirl around the Washington Redskins’ intentions with the No. 2 overall pick. Since head coach Ron Rivera stated “everything is an option” with the pick, rumors about the Redskins considering drafting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have seemingly increased by the day.
However, Tuesday a “First Take” segment on ESPN between Stephen A. Smith and Todd McShay contended Chase Young will be the Redskins’ choice with the second overall pick. Additionally, McShay reported that Redskins owner Dan Snyder “won’t allow” the team to take another quarterback.
Young has been most-favored choice for the Redskins until recently. Yet, the next nugget provided McShay is more eye-popping than drafting Young.
Snyder “won’t allow” the Redskins to take another quarterback a year after the team selected Dwayne Haskins in the first round under the previous regime led by Bruce Allen.
It’s been widely reported that Snyder was involved in last year’s picking of Haskins. Snyder reportedly preferred Haskins when then-head coach Jay Gruden did not.
Then there is the fact that Haskins is “pretty good friends” with Snyder’s son, as the two attended Bullis High School in Potomac, Maryland. And as recent as December, a Washington Post report suggested Haskins was Snyder’s “favorite.”
Still, there is no confirmation of yet that McShay’s report is nothing more than a rumor. No that’s not to say McShay wasn’t told by a source of Snyder not allowing Washington to draft a quarterback. However, everything that a reporter hears is necessarily true this time of the year.
Much like the reports saying the Redskins are seriously considering taking Tagovailoa over Young.
But McShay’s report is startling given we’ve been led to believe that Rivera was the decision-maker with personnel in a coach-centered philosophy. If his report true and Snyder is shutting the door on the thought of taking Tua, then it’s apparent not all bad habits have been lost by the Redskins.
