Chris Thompson likely done with Redskins following JD McKissic signing

Chris Thompson saw the writing on the wall when the Washington Redskins fired Jay Gruden. Following their disappointing 3-13 campaign last season, Thompson knew his time with the Redskins was likely done. Wednesday, the signing of JD McKissic most likely sealed any chance of a Chris Thompson return.

Thompson fit the Gruden system. A third down back, who was a superb pass protector and reliable option for a quarterback out the backfield.

However, he could not stay on the field. Injuries derailed his time in Washington.

In 2016, Thompson played in all 16 games and cemented himself as a viable third down back with 49 catches while added 356 rushing yard sand three touchdowns.

In 2017, he was on pace to having a career-year that may have established him as a household name.

In 10 games he became Kirk Cousins’ safety net with 510 receiving yards and four receiving yards. That season he had a career-high 806 all-purpose yards and six total touchdowns. However, he suffered a fractured fibula in a Week 11 game against New Orleans, ending his season with six games remaining.

In 2018, Thompson was once again missed six games largely due to a rib injury. And last season a toe injury held him out of five games.

Thompson has shown to be productive. He paced at around 62 receptions in each of the past three seasons. However, he has been unable to stay on the field.

Thompson was a Jay Gruden and Bruce Allen favorite. With the two out of Washington, Thompson’s time here was certain to end. Durability not talent was his biggest hindrance with the Redskins.

Now he is set to find a new NFL home after seven seasons. Meanwhile, the Redskins will count on McKissic in hopes his can match or surpass his predecessor’s availability and production.
