REPORT: Redskins among teams doing ‘serious’ homework on QB Jordan Love

The Washington Redskins are among several teams doing “serious” homework on draft prospect quarterback Jordan Love, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Love’s former college coach at Utah State, Matt Wells, told ESPN he has received seven calls from NFL coaches within the past five days about Love.

“I think they are just trying to put the complete story together on him,” Wells said.

Other teams named in Fowler’s report include Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers and the Green Bay Packers.

Team execs are torn about Love, according to Fowler. Some teams see him as the “best” pure passer and others see him as a Day 2 pick.

It’s unclear the level of interest the Redskins have in Love. Fowler’s report adds teams are doing “varying levels of homework.”

Washington has been linked to potentially drafting former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 2 overall pick, however, this is the first they have been publicly linked to another QB prospect.

The Redskins drafted Dwayne Haskins in the first round in last year’s draft. They recently traded a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft for Kyle Allen. Allen is also a young quarterback, spending two seasons with the Carolina Panthers under current Redskins head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner. As it stands, Haskins and Allen are expected to compete for the starting quarterback position in 2020.

Washington will need a third quarterback to add to the roster for training camp and preseason. The status of Alex Smith, who carries a $21.4 million cap hit, is unknown as he continues to recover from his career-threatening leg injury suffered in 2018. With both Haskins and Allen being capable starters, it’s hard to imagine the Redskins would opt for another capable starter. Even if the Redskins have a Day 2 grade on Love and he was to fall in the draft.

Rivera has said “everything is an option” with the No. 2 overall pick. Yet, drafting Love that high may be a bit of a reach, but if they were to trade out of the pick, he could be an option. If at anything having the Redskins being mentioned in this reports, shows Rivera and team Executive VP of Player Personnel, Kyle Smith, are doing their due diligence heading into the first-ever fully virtual NFL Draft.
