Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing revealed he has tested positive for COVID-19. The New York Knicks legend made the announcement Friday afternoon in a joint statement with Georgetown University.
No other member of Georgetown men’s basketball program has tested positive, according to the Hoyas. Ewing is currently isolated and under care at a local hospital.
Ewing starred at Georgetown as a player, leading the Hoyas to three consecutive appearances in the national championship game, winning the national title in 1984. He was the No. 1 overall pick by the Knicks in the first NBA Draft, becoming the first-ever lottery pick.
Ewing was named the head coach of Georgetown in 2017 after a Hall of Fame career in the NBA and a lengthy stint as an NBA assistant coach. In three seasons, Ewing a 49-46 record as the Hoyas coach.
Ewing is the latest DC area-linked sports figure to reveal he has COVID-19. Washington Redskins legend Dexter Manley as well as Redskins’ rookie wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden have contracted the coronavirus. Manley remains hospitalized but improving while Gandy-Golden has since fully recovered.
