The Washington Wizards shared a united statement from their players following the death of George Floyd.
Floyd died May 25 in Minneapolis police custody after an officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for several minutes. Floyd was heard saying “I can’t breathe” as the knee of Derek Chauvin sat on his neck.
Four police officers, including Chauvin were fired following the incident. Chauvin was charged with third degree murder second-degree manslaughter.
Floyd’s death has sparked outrage from many, as this is the latest incident in a storied history of unarmed black men and women dying in encounters with police. Many prominent figures from sports have made statements against racism and police brutality.
Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Bleacher Report are just a few who have made strong statements. Meanwhile, the Wizards opted to allow their players to make a united statement.
According Fred Katz of the Athletic, the statements were truly from the Wizards’ players
The four blocks in the Wizards statement reads:
“We will no longer tolerate the assassination of people of color in this country.”
“We will no longer accept the abuse of power from law enforcement.”
“We will no longer accept ineffective government leaders who are tone-deaf, lack compassion or respect for communities of color.”
“We will no longer shut up and dribble.”
John Wall, Bradley Beal, Davis Bertans and Rui Hachimura were players who also shared the statements over social media.
