Bradley Beal is a two-time NBA All-Star and one of two cornerstone players for the Washington Wizards. He may be able to add part-owner of a Major Baseball team to his resume.
According to an ESPN report, Beal has joined a group, headed by former MLB great Alex Rodriguez and pop star Jennifer Lopez, seeking to buy the New York Mets. Beal is joined by a number of current and former pro athletes, including Brian Urlacher, DeMarco Murray, Joe Thomas, Denver Nuggets center Mason Plumlee and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The group has submitted an initial offer of $1.7 billion, according to the report. Hedge fund billionaire Steven Cohen has a competing offer. All are waiting word from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred on the next step.
Beal’s interested in intriguing. He grew up in St. Louis and is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Additionally, he plays in Washington and the Mets are a divisional rival of the Nationals. Surely, an opportunity to be a part of a very marketable pro sports franchise is too much to pass up, no matter his prior allegiance.
It’s unclear what percentage of ownership Beal would have if their bid is selected. Coincidentally, Beal has the most career earnings than any of listed athlete investors outside of Rodriguez. Beal earned over $117 million in base salaries throughout his career. He has additional $100.6 million remaining through 2023, according to Spotrac. That does not include endorsements or any other business ventures.
