Since 1937 the Washington Redskins have been a staple for generations of fans. Monday, the team announced plans to retire the name after immense pressure to change the team’s name. Some fans are onboard and others are relunctant to buy-in the sudden change. However, current Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins is “looking forward to the future.”
“It’ll always be #HTTR,” Haskins wrote in a tweet shortly after the team’s announcement.
Haskins’ words echo a lot of Washington’s fans, especially those who don’t want to part from the history of the team, but are excited for the re-branding.
The team’s new name has not yet been announced. It appears the team is dealing with trademarks of the new name and logo. Washington Warriors and Washington Red Wolves seem to be the favorites among fans. Until then, the team will be referred to as the Redskins.
Haskins moved to the DMV area in ninth grade and attended Bullis School for high school. He initially committed to Maryland before flipping to Ohio State. Thus he has some Washington, DC area roots and ties to the team’s name. Yet, Haskins is moving forward when the new name is official.
