Washington acquires WashingtonFootball.com for a bargain from unknowing owner

Washington unveiled “WashingtonFootball.com” as its new website domain Friday. Redskins.com now redirects to the new domain.

The domain change coincides with the team’s temporary re-branding to the Washington Football Team. The team acquired the new domain from former registrant, Cal Spears, CEO of Better Collective Tennessee — a sports betting media group.

Spears unknowingly sold the domain to the NFL franchise ahead of them revealing their temporary team name.

Spears tweeted he bought the domain in 2012. He admitted he got a good return-on-investment, but didn’t realize he sold it to Dan Snyder’s organization. Upon realizing who he sold the domain to, Spears acknowledged he undervalued “WashingtonFootball.com.”

But not all was lost. Spears donated the $10,000 return to the American Indian College Fund in a classy act.

American Indian College Fund received a very generous donation. However, Spears missed a golden opportunity. Washington Football Team is valued at $3.4 billion. Thus, they got a bargain, dishing $10,000 for the domain.

Washington will be known as “Washington Football Team” for the 2020 NFL season after retiring their old name and logo. The team will continue the process of looking for a permanent moniker. Head coach Ron Rivera hinted the process could take up to 18 months to choose a team name.
