Washington is now the Washington Football Team temporary for at least the 2020 NFL season. The team is in the continued process of selecting a new name, moving away from the retiring Redskins name and logo.
However, the big change won’t affect the team colors. Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera confirmed to Gayle King of CBS This Morning the burgundy and gold colors “will stay” even after the permanent name change.
“The colors will stay. The big reason is there’s so much tradition and history with this football team that to change the colors would kind of distract from what this team has done in terms of its past history with the championships that it’s won. We don’t want to lose a part of that history.”
Washington’s name change has been met with mixed reactions from fans. But majority of fans have asked to keep the burgundy and gold.
Recently, Washington legend Charles Mann said changing the colors “would be a travesty.”
Unlike a name change, altering the base colors would lose the connection to Washington’s storied franchise history. The news from Rivera will ease any tension from fans concerned about the colors changing.
The process to picking a more permanent name will take some time, according to Rivera. However, one thing is certain the burgundy and gold will stay.
