Trent Williams will have company in San Francisco, as former Washington tight end Jordan Reed has agreed to a one-year deal with the 49ers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Reed will also rejoin 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was Washington’s offensive coordinator during Reed’s rookie season in 2013.
Reed spent seven seasons with Washington, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2016. His best season came in 2015, when he had 87 catches, 952 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Washington released Reed in February following a series of injuries that included multiple concussions. He never played a full season throughout his time in Washington. Reed suffered his seventh documented concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit from Atlanta Falcons safety Keanu Neal in a preseason game in 2019.
Reed was later placed on injured reserve without appearing in any regular season game and remained in the league’s concussion protocol for six months before being cleared.
His agreement with the 49ers is a incentive-laden deal, according to Schefter. Reed has to prove he can stay healthy. He has battled through a toe injury the previous two seasons.
In San Francisco, Jordan Reed won’t be the primary focal point of the offense. The 49ers have a strong run game that will be anchored by the seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams. George Kittle is considered one of the best two or three tight ends in the NFL. Reed can become a safety net for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
In his time in Washington, Reed had 329 catches, 3,371 yards and 24 touchdowns.
