Max Scherzer is not concerned about a hamstring issue that caused him to exit Wednesday’s start after one inning. The Washington Nationals ace left the game against the New York Mets after allowing one run in the first inning.
However following the Nats’ 3-1 loss, Scherzer downplayed the injury.
“I’m really not concerned about this,” Scherzer said per Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports.
Scherzer added by classifying the issue as “not a major injury or even a minor injury, just a day-to-day thing,” per Zuckerman.
Scherzer admitted he tweaked his hamstring yesterday, but the hamstring initially bothered him his last start against Toronto on July 29.
Scherzer allowed one earned run, one hit and a walk while striking out a batter Wednesday before leaving the game. He struck out 21 batters against seven walks in his first two starts of the season through 12 2/3 innings.
News of his hamstring being of no concern is good for the defending World Series champions. The Nationals’ three-game win streak was snapped as a result of tonight’s loss. They’re now 4-5 on the season.
Washington has been without their other stud pitcher, Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg has yet to start a game this season. He has been hampered with a nerve issue in his pitching hand that led to him being scratched from his only scheduled start on July 25.
Scherzer’s next scheduled start is Aug. 11 against the very same Mets.
