Alex Smith expected to be activated off PUP list

The Washington Football Team is expected to activate quarterback Alex Smith off the physically unable to perform list Sunday, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

Smith hasn’t played or participated in a practice since his devastating leg injury since November 18, 2018. Smith suffered a compound fracture, breaking his tibia and fibula. He endured 17 surgeries to repair his injured leg as well as combat a series of bacterial infections that nearly cost him to lost his leg. He then wore an external fixator for eight months.

Despite all he endured, Smith vowed to return to football. He rehabbed for the past year and was cleared to return to football activities by his doctors just ahead of training camp.

Washington placed him on the PUP list, needing to clear him for the football portion of his physical. That day is coming.

Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, posted a video of the family apparently celebrating the wonderful news.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera previously stated Smith would be “part of our equation” in the team’s competition for starting quarterback. Smith will now compete with 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins and third-year pro Kyle Allen, who Washington acquired in a trade this off-season after he spent two seasons under Rivera in Carolina.
