Dwayne Haskins threw a pick-six to Landon Collins late in practice. The throw was intended for running back JD McKissic, but Collins baited Haskins before jumping on the route to intercept the pass on his way down the left sideline, according to Kyle Stackpole.
The sequence prompted Haskins to stay after practice and work on the route. Aiding him was none other than head coach Ron Rivera, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington. Rivera was seen instructing Haskins as well as McKissic on his route.
Rivera explained after practice he liked the decision of Haskins, but thought Haskins was “late” and the pass was “poorly thrown,” according to John Keim of ESPN.
Haskins was otherwise strong throughout practice. He connected on 13-of-13 throws to start Tuesday’s practice prior to his interception to Collins.
Rivera and his staff seem focused on developing Haskins to be a starting quarterback. It’s a far cry from the perception of Washington’s previous coaching staff led by Jay Gruden. Haskins has worked hard this off-season with the goal of becoming the franchise quarterback Washington intended him to be when they selected him 15th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Rivera noted he is pleased with Haskins’ approach throughout training camp. And Haskins is showing he is receptive to teaching moments when he has slip ups like in today’s practice.
