The Washington Football Team has postponed Thursday’s scrimmage practice at FedEx Field in the wake of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin. Head coach Ron Rivera released statement on the team’s decision.
Rivera and Washington team president Jason Wright approached owner Dan Snyder about their idea of postponing the Thursday’s practice. Instead, the team will use the time for reflection and continuous of their open dialogue on issues of racism and social injustice in America.
Rivera says the team is also planning similar discussion with the business and stadium operations of the organization. The team held similar discussions following the death of George Floyd while in custody of Minneapolis police officers.
In June, Rivera said, “We can’t be afraid to say it. I will say it again. Black Lives matter,” amid the social unrest and protests that followed Floyd and Breonna Taylor’s deaths.
