The Washington Football Team announced Tuesday the renaming of two main streets leading into team venues to honor legendary head coach Joe Gibbs and safety Sean Taylor.
The main road leading into Washington’s home stadium, FedEx Field, in Landover, Maryland will be named Sean Taylor Road. It previously was named Redskins Road. Additionally, the team’s headquarters address in Ashburn, Virginia will change to 21300 Coach Gibbs Drive.
Gibbs is the greatest coach in franchise history, spending 16 seasons there in two stints. He won three Super Bowls in his first stint with three different quarterbacks and three different starting running backs.
Taylor has become arguably the most popular player in franchise history despite playing only four seasons. He had an amazing start to his career before he was tragically killed in 2007 at his home in Miami, Florida. Taylor’s style of play has inspired many of today’s safeties, including current Washington safeties Landon Collins and Sean Davis.
The No. 21 has been taken out of rotation in Washington, but many of today’s safeties honor him by wearing the number across college football and the NFL.
Both Sean Taylor Road and Coach Gibbs Drive will be officially named prior to Washington’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13.
The renaming of the roads is part of the team’s commitment to erasing its previous name and logo. Washington is in the process of scrubbing references of its former name throughout FedEx Field, its headquarters and website. The team temporarily changed its name to the Washington Football Team, as officials consider a new permanent name.
