Ron Rivera Explains why Reuben Foster was placed on season-ending IR

Reuben Foster was placed on injured reserve Saturday, effectively ending his 2020 season. Foster had hoped to return to the field after recovering from a severe knee injury he suffered last year. Unfortunately, as practices progressed, Foster’s health “plateaued” according to head coach Ron Rivera.

By placing him on IR, Rivera wanted to give Foster more time to work under Washington’s care to see if he can get back at some point beyond this season.

Foster suffered a torn ACL, MCL and LCL on May 2019 during an OTA practice. It was his first practice with Washington since the team claimed him off waivers in November 2018. Foster also suffered nerve damage and developed a drop foot.

He worked his way back back and was activated off the PUP list on Aug. 9. However, it became increasingly clear his leg was still an issue. His reps diminished and he fell behind other linebackers such as Shaun Dion Hamilton, Cole Holcomb and rookie Khaleke Hudson.

Foster was set to enter his third season under contract with Washington. Due to him being placed on the NFL Commissioner’s List in 2018 and his injury in 2019, his rookie deal will expire without him playing a single snap in a Washington uniform.

Washington previously declined Foster’s fifth-year option.
