Washington protects three players on practice squad

The NFL modified the league’s practice squad rules for the 2020 season in large due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each teams practice squad limit has expanded from 10 to 16 players. Additionally, Each team is allowed to protect up to four players from being signed off their practice squad every Tuesday.

Washington protected three players this week– wide receiver Cam Sims, safety Jeremy Reaves and guard Joshua Garnett.

Protecting Sims, Reaves and Garnett shows where the trio is valued within the organization. Their protection is particular interesting considering Washington is unproven at wide receiver, left guard and free safety.

Sims is entering his third season with Washington. This is his second straight year starting the season on the practice squad. Like each training camp, Sims flashed this year but ultimately was cut when the team finalized their 53-man roster.

Reaves too is entering his third year with the team. He has played in 11 games, starting three last season with Washington.

Garnett was a first-round pick in 2016 of San Francisco, starting 11 games as a rookie. However, he has been limited to seven games since due to various injuries. He was a late training camp addition to Washington after being waived by the Detroit Lions in August.
