The NHL free agency period won’t officially start until Friday at noon. However, all signs are pointing to the Washington Capitals signing former New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
TSN’s Bob McKenize said “it’s a good bet” Lunqvist lands in Washington during NBC Sports’ broadcast of the NHL Entry Draft.
This comes a day after McKenzie reported the Capitals were the “clear frontrunner” for the 38-year old Rangers legend.
Following Tuesday’s draft, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan added to the speculation of Lundqvist signing with Washington.
David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period says both Lundqvist and the Capitals have a deal already in place.
Lundqvist would presumably backup 23-year old goaltender Ilya Samsonov, who appears primed to be the lead netminder after an impressive rookie season in 2019-20. Washington is handing over the keys to Samsonov. Longtime goalie Braden Holtby is expected to sign elsewhere in free agency after being with the team 10 seasons.
The Capitals and Lundqvist appear to have mutual interest, and with good reseason. For Lundqvist he’ll be expected to get close to 30 starts serving behind Samsonov. Additionally, the future Hall of Fame player will get to mentor Samsonov, while getting a chance to contend for a Stanley Cup.
Lundqvist’s play has declined in each of the past two seasons, and the Rangers moved on from him buying out the final year of his contract. But, his numbers are still serviceable for a backup. Last season, he had a .905 save percentage with a 3.16 goals against average.
Washington is focus at building a win-now team, as they feel their championship window remains opened. Longtime captain Alex Ovechkin is coming off his ninth Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, for leading the NHL in goals scored, at 34 years old. Landing a player the caliber of Lundqvist for depth will hopefully boast the Capitals’ chances.
