Maryland junior forward Jarius Hamilton has been granted a transfer waiver by the NCAA and is immediately eligible to play this season. The school made the announcement Tuesday evening. The 6-foot-8 Hamilton transferred from Boston College this offseason.
“I am so appreciative of the NCAA and Maryland for their efforts in granting me this opportunity,” Hamilton said in a statement released by the school. “I am proud to be a Maryland Terrapin and am looking forward to finishing my career with my teammates in College Park.”
Hamilton, a Charlotte native, played 54 games two seasons at Boston College. Last season, he averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 25.7 minutes per game. He shot 42.8% from the field, including 28.1% from three.
Maryland shared video of head coach Mark Turgeon delivering the good news to Hamilton during practice. An emotional Hamilton relayed the news to his father after practice.
Hamilton’s addition gives the Terrapins a huge boost with their frontcourt depth. Maryland will turn to five scholarship frontcourt players to fill the void left by Jalen Smith departing for the NBA Draft.
Maryland also added the 6-foot-9 Galin Smith, a graduate-transfer from Alabama this offseason. The pair of transfers join 6-foot-10 Switzerland freshman Arnaud Revas and sophomores 7-foot-2 Chol Marial and Donta Scott, who started 21 games as a freshman last season.
Maryland will also be looking to fill the void of four-year starter Anthony Cowan at guard. However, they’ll have a trio of returning players to lead their backcourt with All-Big Ten selection Darryl Morsell, 2020 Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Aaron Wiggins and junior Eric Ayala.
