The Washington Football Team has lost a player from their practice squad, as the Detroit Lions have signed running back Jonathan Williams to their 53-man active roster.
Williams joined Washington’s practice squad earlier this month after being released by the Lions following training camp in September. Originally a fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills, Williams has bounced around the league with additional stops in Denver, New Orleans and Indianapolis.
The odds of Williams being elevated to Washington’s 53-man roster was currently slim with the emergence of rookie Antonio Gibson. Veteran JD McKissic has meshed as a complement to Gibson and Peyton Barber is cemented as the short-yardage back.
Williams is set to join a backfield just as crowded in his second stint in Detroit. The Lions already have a former Washington running back in Adrian Peterson. While he currently leads the team in rushing with 314 yards. However, rookie D’Andre Swift is gradually becoming the featured back there.
Additionally, the Lions have Kerryon Johnson and activated Bo Scarbrough off injured reserve last week. It will be interesting to see if the Lions have some sort of shakeup in their backfield.
Meanwhile, the impending loss of Williams leaves Washington without a fourth running back currently. Bryce Love remains on injured reserve with a knee injury. It’s unclear when if or when he would be able to return.
Washington now has 13 players on the practice squad following the loss of Williams, including the reported signing of defensive back Jordan Brown.
