A missed extra point by Minnesota kicker Brock Walker capped off a stunning 45-44 overtime win for the Maryland Terrapins. The kick never had a chance, sailing wide right immediately after leaving off Walker’s foot.
Maryland trailed Minnesota by 17 entering the fourth quarter before pulling off an improbable rally to send the game to overtime. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa found wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. in the end zone early in the fourth quarter to cut Maryland’s deficit to 38-28.
Maryland running back Jake Funk scored on a 19-yard run that help tie the game at 38-38 late in the fourth quarter. In overtime, Tagovailoa capped off a five-touchdown performance with a two-yard touchdown run to give Maryland a 45-38 lead.
Minnesota would respond on their first drive in overtime with a two-yard touchdown run by Seth Green. However, the Golden Gophers’ kicking issues came back to haunt them when Walker, who is recovering from sports hernia surgery, shank the would-be game-tying extra point.
After a disastrous start to the season last week at Northwestern, Tagovailoa and Maryland bounced back with the comeback upset win over Minnesota Friday night.
Tagovailoa threw for 394 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also added 64 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Funk rushed for 216 yards and a score.
Minnesota falls to 0-2 on the season. The loss overshadows an impressive night by freshman running back and Maryland native Mohamed Ibrahim, who rushed for 207 yards and four touchdowns.
