Washington Football Team defensive end Ryan Kerrigan has requested a trade, but Washington has told teams they won’t deal the star pass rusher, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Kerrigan’s role and snaps have diminished with the addition of rookie defensive end Chase Young along with 2019 first-round pick Montez Sweat.
Kerrigan is in the final year of his five-year, $57.5 million contract. Before the season he maintained he wanted to stay with Washington “for the long haul.”
He got off to a great start this season, becoming the franchise’s all-time sack leader with a two-sack performance in Week 1. However, he has taken a backseat to Young and Sweat since. In a Week 6 loss to the New York Giants, Kerrigan played a career-low seven snaps despite coming away with the team’s lone sack in the game.
The decrease in playing time hasn’t hurt Kerrigan’s efficiency. He has four sacks on the season which is second on the team only to Sweat’s five, despite being limited to about a third of Washington’s defensive snaps.
Washington is the only team Kerrigan has played for since being drafted in the first round in 2011. He has made a huge impact on the franchise both on and off the field. Thus, Washington appears intent on holding on to the 32-year old pass rusher.
