Last week, free agent safety Eric Reid declined an offer to join the Washington Football Team practice squad. Reid explained he didn’t believe the practice squad was “reflective or indicative” of his career.
On Monday, Washington head coach Ron Rivera explained the practice squad offer was for Reid to “get his legs under him” since he was not in training camp this summer, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. However, Reid thought differently, feeling he was in great shape and ready to play right away.
Washington lost starting strong safety Landon Collins for the rest of the season due to an Achilles injury. Collins suffered the non-contact injury in the second quarter of Washington’s Week 7 win against the Dallas Cowboys. Collins was scheduled to have surgery Monday.
Rivera added he preferred to take looks at Washington’s young safeties in place of Collins right now. The team signed Jeremy Reaves from the practice squad. Rivera believes Reaves earned the opportunity to be on the 53-man roster after going through training camp.
Additionally, Rivera didn’t want Reid’s presence “hanging over” rookie safety Kamren Curl. Curl is expected to start in Collins’ place. Curl has been impressive this season playing in Washington’s “Buffalo” position as a nickel safety. Now, the former Arkansas Razorback will get the opportunity to start.
