Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins could be game-time decision

Dustin Hopkins has kicked for Washington in 43 games consecutive games. That streak is in jeopardy this week, as Hopkins is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Hopkins has been limited in practice throughout the week with a groin injury. Head coach Ron Rivera says Hopkins could be a game-time decision.

If Hopkins is unable to kick, Washington will elevate Kaare Vedvik from the practice squad to handle field goals and extra points against the Lions. Vedvik has been on Washington’s practice squad since Oct. 9. He has attempted only one field goal during his NFL career, coming in 2019 while he was with the New York Jets.

Vedvik was a preseason standout for the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. But with Justin Tucker cemented as the Ravens kicker, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings for a fifth-round draft pick after an impressive showing in the preseason opener. However, the Vikings released him before the season opener.

Rivera said on Thursday, Hopkins would have to be able kick either Friday or Saturday for a chance to be active Sunday.

Hopkins has been Washington’s primary place kicker since Week 2 of the 2015 season. He has attempted 160 field goals as well as 160 extra points in 79 games. Although he hasn’t been as sharp this season as in years past, making 10-of-14 field goal attempts.

Still, his potential absence could be concerning having to rely on the inexperienced Vedvik. Washington’s 19.1 points per game is third-fewest in the NFL only ahead of the New York Giants and winless New York Jets. Thus, points could be premium for Washington against the Lions.
