The Washington Wizards have traded 2019 second-round draft pick Admiral Schofield to the Oklahoma City Thunder to complete Wednesday’s draft day trade, the team announced.
Washington acquired the draft rights of Cassius Winston, who was the 53rd overall pick in Wednesday’s draft, and a 2024 second-round draft pick from the Memphis Grizzlies. The Thunder receive Schofield and the draft rights to Vit Krejci, who Washington selected 37th overall.
Schofield struggled for minutes as a rookie last season. He appeared in 33 games, averaging 11.2 minutes with 3.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. He shot 38% from the field, including 31.1% from three.
It remains to be seen how he fits into the makeup of Oklahoma City. The Thunder have retooled their roster after trading Chris Paul and Dennis Schroeder this offseason.
The Wizards add Winston, who played four years at Michigan State. As a Spartan, Winston was a two-time Consensus All-American, winning Big Ten Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the Big Ten Tournament in 2019.
Winston potentially gives the Wizards depth at point guard slotting behind the returning John Wall and Ish Smith. As Wall returns from a torn Achilles, his minutes will be limited and he will be restricted in back-to-backs, creating a need for a third primary ball-handler to fill any void.
