Before becoming a Heisman Trophy winner and leading the LSU Tigers to the 2019 National Championship, Joe Burrow was a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. On Sunday, Burrow got to meet a handful of his former Ohio State teammates when the Cincinnati Bengals faced the Washington Football Team.
Unfortunately, the reunion came to an abrupt end. Burrow was carted off the field in the third quarter after an apparent serious knee injury. The severity of the injury was immediately clear after Burrow was hit by Washington’s Montez Sweat and Jonathan Allen.
Allen lay on the turf in disgust, knowing that Burrow was hurt.
After Burrow was loaded onto the cart, the first group of players to approach and wish him well were his former Buckeyes teammates from the Washington Football Team, quarterback Dwayne Haskins, wide receiver Terry McLaurin and defensive end Chase Young.
Much was made of Burrow’s Ohio State roots and connections to the trio of Washington players leading into the week. Burrow and McLaurin spent time together on the Buckeyes’ scout team in practice. Haskins beat out Burrow for the starting QB spot in 2018, leading to his transfer to LSU. He and Young were the top-two overall picks in this year’s draft.
Their bond was more evident in the somber moment.
Following the game, the trio offered more well wishes on their fallen brother.
Burrow lived up to the billing of a No. 1 overall pick. Sunday was an unfortunate end to his rookie season. All hope is for a speedy recovery.
