Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans will be a late show to training camp due to a work visa issue, head coach Scott Brooks announced Tuesday.
The Wizards began individual workouts on Monday. However, Bertans’ arrival will have to wait as he traveled to his native Latvia this past off-season.
Bertans signed a five-year, $80 million deal last month to return to the Wizards. He is looking to build off his career-year last season in which he averaged a career-high 15.4 points and shot 42.4% from three-point range.
With a new contract in tow, Bertans is expected to increase those numbers especially with the return of John Wall. Wall is returning from a ruptured Achilles that held him out of all of last season. His vision and passing skills should create more scoring opportunities through spacing for the sharpshooting Bertans.
Hopefully, Davis Bertans is able to report sooner rather than later. The Wizards’ first of three preseason games is scheduled for last than two weeks. They’ll face the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center on Dec. 13. The NBA’s 72-game regular season is slated to begin Dec. 22.
