Washington Capitals forward Beck Malenstyn is expected to be to miss 6-8 months after undergoing successful surgery to repair an Achilles tendon, the team announced Saturday.
Malenstyn sustained the injury training in Vancouver ahead of the upcoming NHL season, which a start date has yet to be determined.
The 22-year old expected to compete for a roster spot as a bottom-six forward this season.
He appeared in three games last season for the Capitals. He made Washington’s final roster going in the NHL bubble. Malenstyn was a fifth-round draft pick in 2016. He appeared in 46 games with the AHL-affiliate Hershey Bears, posting 15 points with seven goals and eight assists.
Malenstyn is the second Capitals player sidelined with an Achilles injury. Defenseman Michal Kempny tore his Achilles also training in October. His timetable of recovery was 6-8 months at time of injury.
