The Washington Football Team is releasing wide receiver Dontrelle Inman to active rookie wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden off injured reserve, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Inman signed with Washington this offseason to become the stopgap No. 2 wide receiver next to star Terry McLaurin. He played that role to minimal success, before a hamstring sidelined him for three games. However, upon his return in Week 12, he saw his role diminished in the offense in favor of younger receivers.
That’s led to Inman being a healthy inactive the last two games with his lack of contribution on special teams. Now, he will go on waivers with an opportunity to land elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Gandy-Golden returns to the team after missing the past eight games with a hamstring injury.
Gandy-Golden landed on injured reserve after injuring his hamstring on the opening drive in Week 6 against the New York Giants. He returned to practice on Dec. 11 to work his way back into football shape.
The embattled rookie has had his fair share of hurdles in his first year as a pro, including a concussion that forced him to miss portion of training camp and the season opener. Washington drafted him in the fourth round to emerge in their passing game alongside McLaurin.
However his return may be without McLaurin in the lineup. The star wide out is doubtful to play in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Given the dire situation, Gandy-Golden may be looked on heavily as Washington needs a win to clinch the NFC East.
