Just as Washington parted ways with a failed draft pick, a failed pick from its past wants another opportunity with the team. Former third-round pick, running back Matt Jones tweeted “Bring me back up to Washington.”
Jones flashed as a rookie in 2015. His hard style running and versatility led to him becoming the featured back in 2016. But his struggles fumbling the football ultimately forced Washington’s hands to release him ahead of the 2017 season.
In 20 games, Jones rushed for 950 yards and six touchdowns. But, he had eight fumbles.
Jones landed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, but was waived after appearing in five games. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2018 season but was released after the preseason.
He played with the Saint Louis Battlehawks of the XFL in 2020. He rushed for 310 yards and a touchdown before the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It’s unclear if Washington would be interested. The team is entering the final week of the regular season with hopes of winning the NFC East division.
Washington appears to love its running back situation with stud rookie Antonio Gibson leading the way, a third-round pick as well. JD McKissic has settled in as a third-back and receiving option out of the backfield. Peyton Barber is their short yardage back. All three are signed through at least next season.
