Washington signs RB Jonathan Williams to practice squad

Running back Jonathan Williams is headed back to the Washington Football Team for a second time this season. That’s after his second run with the Detroit Lions ended last week.

Washington signed Williams to their practice squad, the team announced Thursday. They released former Maryland Terrapins running back Javon Leake to make room for Williams.

Williams has been back-and-forth between Detroit and Washington this year. He joined the Lions in August, but was released after Week 1. The Lions signed him back to their practice squad before releasing him again.

He landed on Washington’s practice squad in October. But three weeks later the Lions signed him off Washington’s practice squad in lieu of injuries at the position.

Williams found himself sitting behind Adrian Peterson, rookie D’Andre Swift, and Kerryon Johnson with the room at full health. Thus, the opportunities didn’t exist.

Washington has a chance to win the NFC East division title on Sunday. Williams is unlikely to play, but given the fact lead back Antonio Gibson has been hobbled by a toe injury, Washington is adding a more reliable option if needed for the playoffs.
