The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced the team will don their red jerseys and pewter pants in Saturday’s wild card playoff game against the Washington Football Team. The Buccaneers’ choice is custom for home games. However, they’ll be on the road as the game will be played at Washington’s FedEx Field.
There is no official announcement from Washington, yet. Home teams have first choice of uniform, thus logical thinking suggests Washington has opted to wear their popular all-white uniforms. The team is a perfect 3-0 this season with the clean white jersey and pants.
The uniform combo was shelved for more than a decade before Washington re-introduced them in Week 13 of this season against the 11-0 Pittsburgh Steelers. Ron Rivera, who is in his first year as Washington’s head coach, said he waited for a big game to roll out the uniform combo fans campaigned for since the team last wore them in 2009. Washington handed the Steelers their first loss of the year 23-17.
Since, Washington defeated San Francisco in Week 14 and in their NFC East-clinching win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17 wearing the uniforms. Now they’ll wear them again Saturday against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. Washington has not wore the uniform combo at home this season.
A team choosing a motivating uniform isn’t unique for Washington sports teams. The Washington Nationals had a magical run with their blue alternate uniforms, winning the club’s first-ever World Series title in 2019.
Could the Washington Football Team have a similar run?
