Alex Smith said he will take “a few weeks” to mull over his future in football, according to Sam Fortier of the Washington Post. Smith wants to consult with his wife and kids, who have “been through a lot” in the last two years.
Smith completed the greatest comeback in NFL history. He overcame a catastrophic leg injury he suffered in 2018 that threatened his life, career, and amputation of his leg. He endured 17 surgeries to combat the life-threatening infection while saving and repairing his leg.
Miraculously, two years later he returned to the field to play football again this season. He worked his way from third on the depth chart to once again being the Washington Football Team starting quarterback. He posted a 5-1 record in his six starts, helping Washington win the NFC East division title and make the postseason.
Unfortunately, Smith had to watch Saturday’s playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the sidelines. A right calf injury kept him off the field. He said it was “really difficult” for him not to be on the field with his teammates, the same teammates he steered to the playoffs.
The calf injury that kept him out of two additional regular season games as well, showed the vulnerability of the 36-year old QB is coming off a major injury. Smith insisted the calf injury was unrelated to his 2018 injury. Yet, it was on the same leg and has cast doubts of him playing moving forward.
Smith isn’t thinking about that not right now. Instead he is “living in the moment.”
Given all he’s gone through, it’s a moment he more than deserved.
