Kyle Schwarber signed a one-year deal worth $10 million with the Washington Nationals. However, Schwarber has a $11 mutual option for a second year in 2022, according to Bob Nightendale of USA TODAY Sports.
Turns out Schwarber will make a base salary of $7 million in 2021. There’s a $3 million buyout if the Nationals decided on their end not to exercise the option. Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports explains since mutual options are rarely exercised, that means Schwarber’s 2021 salary with the mutual option accounting towards the $10 million he’ll make in the one-year deal.
It’s a team-friendly deal that allows the Nationals flexibility to make more moves to improve their roster. Schwarber acknowledged he had talks with New York Yankees, but with his familiarity of manager Dave Martinez, the Nationals were his first choice.
