The Washington Football Team’s search to fill their general manager opening appears to have started. Washington has requested interviews with two NFL executives for GM according to separate reports.
Washington requested to interview San Francisco 49ers VP of Player Personnel Martin Mayhew, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. They also requested an interview with Tennessee Titans VP of Player Personnel Ryan Cowden, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports.
Mayhew may be the more familiar name for Washington Football fans. Mayhew played for Washington from 1989-1992 as was part of the team’s Super Bowl XXVI victory. He also played four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He moved into front office work in 2001 and became the Detroit Lions’ GM in 2008. His first year as GM the Lions infamously became the first NFL team to go 0-16. He remained the GM through the 2015 season. Lions made the postseason in two of his eight seasons as GM. Mayhew spent the past four seasons in the 49ers’ front office under GM John Lynch.
Cowden has familiarity with Washington head coach Ron Rivera going back to his time with the Carolina Panthers. Cowden was the Assistant Director of College Scouting in Carolina. He has been with the Titans since 2016.
Since Rivera’s arrival in January 2020, Washington has tended to hire coaches and execs from the Panthers, including Washington’s Senior VP of Football Administration Rob Rogers.
