Washington reportedly had better offer than Rams for Matthew Stafford

The Los Angeles Rams won the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes. The Detroit Lions are reportedly getting a massive haul in return, including quarterback Jared Goff. However, one league source believes the Washington Football Team’s offer to the Lions was “better,” according to Josina Anderson.

In addition to Goff, the Lions are receiving first-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023 and a third-round pick this year, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. What did Washington offer that was better?

According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, Washington made a significant offer to Detroit, which included more immediate help than what the Lions received.

Goff’s contract is not ideal. He is owed just over $51 million in base salary over the next three seasons. But consider newly hired Lions GM Brad Holmes spent 18 years in the Rams organization before being hired by Detroit. Besides gifting his former employer, it appears Holmes and Lions wanted to do Stafford a favor on his way out.

Stafford preferred to play in Los Angeles and with Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Washington is reportedly willing to offer more than a first-round pick to land a formidable quarterback. However, they miss out on Stafford to McVay, their former offensive coordinator. Thus, their search for a quarterback continues.
