Jon Lester returning to Nationals after successful thyroid surgery

Left-handed pitcher Jon Lester is flying back from West Palm Beach today. He will rejoin the Washington Nationals Monday, manager Davey Martinez said according to Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports.

“I feel relieved that everything came out well,” Martinez said of Lester, per Zuckerman.

Lester had surgery to remove his thyroid gland removal Friday in New York. The issue was discovered after Lester experienced fatigue during Spring Training.

The Nationals will start to ramp him back up into his normal routine. Lester will throw off the mound “as soon as possible.”

The 37-year old Jon Lester signed a one-year deal with the Nationals. He’ll make a base salary of $2 million with an additional $3 million signing bonus deferred to 2023.

He is expected to slot in as the Nationals’ fourth starter in their rotation behind the dynamic trio of Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin. Lester will look to bounce back from a sluggish 2020 season in which he posted a 5.16 ERA in 12 starts with the Chicago Cubs.
