Dwayne Haskins is no longer with the Washington Football Team. The embattled quarterback was released by the team in December after poor play, off-the-field distractions and work ethic issues.
Appearing on the Colin Cowherd Podcast, Washington head coach Ron Rivera finally opened up about Haskins’ work ethic issues.
“You know what? I tried to come to terms with him,” Rivera told Cowherd, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “He’s a very talented player. He’s got an NFL arm, a legit arm, and there’s a part of him that he wants to, but something keeps getting in the way. I’m not sure what it was, and that was the hard part because he puts in the time, and then he doesn’t. And you’re wondering, ‘Where is he? What’s he doing?’ You see him over there and you go, ‘OK,’ and then you don’t see him. So I think the thing he needs to do is just prioritize. The kid, as I said, he’s talented, and if he ever does get it, he’s going to make an impact.”
Haskins started the 2020 season as the starting quarterback. However, struggled mightily and was benched in Week 5. After injuries to Kyle Allen and Alex Smith, Haskins was thrust back in as starter in Week 15.
Unfortunately, his struggles continued. After two additional lackluster starts and being benched for Taylor Heinicke, Haskins was released by Washington.
The 2019 first-round pick played 16 games with Washington and ultimately he was cut in less than two seasons after being drafted. He completed 60.1 % of his passes for 2,804 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Following his release, Haskins signed a reserved/futures contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hopefully, a change in environment could helped him get right on track.
