The Washington Nationals have been given the green light to start their 2021 season amid the club’s COVID-19 outbreak. The Nationals will take field for the first time against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
Four Washington players have tested positive for the coronavirus. An additional seven players have been deemed close contacts. Thus, the Nationals will have to turn to call ups from their alternate site in Fredericksburg to replace any player ineligible to play against the Braves.
According to Maria Torres of the Athletic, the Nationals are calling up right-hand pitcher Kyle McGowin, left-hander Sam Clay, catcher Tres Barrera, infielder Luis Garcia and outfielder Yadiel Hernandez for the season opener on Tuesday.
It was reported over the weekend, the Nationals will be without outfielder Kyle Schwarber, lefty Jon Lester, infielder Josh Harrison and catcher Alex Avila against the Braves. Their absences have not officially been linked COVID-19.
More names could be called up as a total of 11 players have been affected. However, general manager Mike Rizzo noted that not all 11 players were projected for the Opening Day roster.
Monday, the Nationals will hold their first workout since Mar. 29. There should be some indication of added names then.
