Could the Washington Capitals get some re-enforcement in the net? While, their two young stud goalies have down a solid job, the Capitals aren’t ruling out veteran Henrik Lundqvist returning this season from open-heart surgery, according to TSN’s Frank Seravalli.
“Henrik Lundqvist has very quietly continued to skate, he is intent on resuming his career after undergoing open-heart surgery so long as his health allows,” Seravalli reported on Tuesday’s edition of “Insider Trading.” “He’s awaiting word from doctors this week, a critical appointment that will determine his near-term and long-term future. The Washington Capitals, while everything would have to go right, aren’t ruling out a return for Henrik Lundqvist this season.”
Lunqvist, who spent 15 seasons with the New York Rangers, signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the Capitals. The former Vezina Trophy winner was initially brought in to pair with Ilya Samsonov.
However, he was forced to opt out of playing ahead of the start of the season after a heart condition was discovered. The 39-year old underwent open-heart surgery in January.
As he is recovering and getting himself back in shape, the door appears to be open on joining the Capitals before the season ends.
The Capitals have compiled a 25-10-4 record this season without Lundqvist. Samsonov and rookie Vitek Vanecek have thrived in his absence. They are currently in first-place of the Eastern division.
