Despite the rumored interest, the Washington Football Team will not have representation at the pro day of North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, ESPN’s John Keim reports.
Washington did attend Lance’s first pro day. However, Washington selects 19th overall in this year’s NFL Draft and if there is indeed interest in the QB, acquiring will most likely require a huge trade up.
Head coach Ron Rivera has not ruled out drafting a quarterback despite the team signing Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason. But it will be based on how the draft plays out. This year the top five quarterbacks are expected to be selected within the top 10 picks. Four could go in the first four picks starting with Trevor Lawrence to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Any team needing a quarterback picking outside the top-10 will have to job up into a prime position much like the San Francisco 49ers did moving 12th to third. It’s the 49ers who are behind Lance’s second pro day. Just as they were a week ago with Ohio State QB Justin Fields.
Not attending a second pro day doesn’t change the outlook Washington has on Lance. They just feel no need to attend to sway their interest or lack thereof. Lance is arguably the biggest question mark in the draft.
He played one game in 2020 due to COVID-19. He had just 17 starts during his collegiate career.
Last week, Washington general manager Martin Mayhew expressed his concern over quarterback prospects with limited playing time.
“Anytime you see guys with limited time on the job, that is a concern for me with the quarterback position,” Mayhew said, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Mayhew also said the team is “confident” in the quarterbacks on their roster. But, Washington is seeking a long-term answer at the position.
