Alex Ovechkin is “unlikely” to play in the Washington Capitals next game against the New York Rangers on Wednesday, head coach Peter Laviotte told reporters.
Ovechkin is dealing with an undisclosed lower-body injury. He missed four games after apparently being injured during a Apr. 22 game against the New York Islanders.
The three-time Hart Trophy winner returned to the ice on Monday against the Rangers. However, his return was cut short after one shift of 39 seconds. Ovechkin came off the ice and did not return to the Capitals’ 6-3 win.
The Capitals are currently tied for first place in the East division with the Pittsburgh Penguins at 71 points with four games remaining for Washington.
The focus going down the stretch will be on Ovechkin’s health for the playoffs.
In 44 games this season, Ovechking has 24 goals and 18 assists.
