Russell Westbrook made history Saturday, recording his 181st career triple-double. That ties the Washington Wizards guard with Hall of Fame guard Oscar Robertson for most triple-doubles in NBA history.
Westbrook tied the record with a triple-double against the Indiana Pacers, finding Bradley Beal before his teammate finished the sequence with a floating jumper late in the third quarter.
Robertson’s mark seemed insurmountable and one of the rare records that would never be reached or broken. However, Westbrook has progressed into the modern day Oscar Robertson, tallying triple-doubles at an unprecedented clip.
“There’s no doubt about it. I hope he gets it,” Robertson told The New York Times on Wednesday.
Westbrook now has 35 triple-doubles this season, his first with the Washington Wizards. He’s already has the Wizards all-time franchise record. He had 138 while in an Oklahoma City Thunder uniform and eight in his one season with the Houston Rockets. This is his third season with at least 34 triple-doubles. His career-high of 42 came during his MVP season in 2016-17.
Entering Saturday’s game, Westbrook averaged 21.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 11.4 assists. He is already assured his third season averaging a triple-double.
