Former Hawai’i star QB Colt Brennan dies at age 37

Former University of Hawai’i star quarterback Colt Brennan has died at the age of 37. Brennan’s father, Terry confirmed the news to Stephen Tsai of the Star Advertiser.

Colt Brennan was in the fifth month of a stay in an inpatient facility when he was found unconscious. He died at Hoag Hospital in Southern California on Monday while surrounded by family members.

After being dismissed from the University of Colorado, Brennan starred three seasons at Hawai’i. He threw for over 4,000 each season, including 5,549 yards in 2006. That season he also tossed an NCAA-record 58 touchdowns. The record was surpassed by Joe Burrow while at LSU in 2019.

Brennan returned for his senior season in 2007, guiding Hawai’i to a perfect 12-0 regular season record. He finished third in the Heismann Trophy voting. Hawai’i ranked 10th in the Associated Poll before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

The Washington Football Team selected Brennan in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He appeared to be a preseason sensation. He was 36-of-53 passing for 411 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Brennan spent his rookie season third on the depth chart behind Jason Campbell and Todd Collins. He looked to compete for a roster spot in 2009. However, he spent the season on injured reserve due to a hamstring and hip injury. He was released in 2010.

The Washington Football Team acknowledged Brennan on social media after learning of his passing.

He spent one month with the Oakland Raiders before being released before the 2010 season.

Following a car accident that caused a brain injury, Brennan spent time with the United Football League, CFL and Arena Football.

He had a series of legal issues including driving under the influence and trespassing in recent years.
